What is a website SEO audit?
Understand what a useful SEO audit checks, what it cannot establish automatically and how a report should become a prioritised plan.

An audit investigates what is holding a website back
A useful SEO audit reviews whether important pages can be discovered, understood and used. It connects findings to the website’s purpose instead of treating the number of warnings as the result.
The scope should be explicit: a public-page scan is different from an investigation with Search Console access, analytics and knowledge of the business.
What the review can include
| Area | Examples of useful evidence |
|---|---|
| Discovery and indexing | Status codes, robots directives, canonical choices and sitemap entries. |
| Page content | Titles, headings, service clarity and whether the page meets its intended search need. |
| Site structure | Relevant internal links, orphan pages and confusing duplication. |
| Customer journey | Mobile usability, contact links and the route to a genuine enquiry. |
| Search performance | Query and page trends where suitable first-party access is available. |
A score is not a diagnosis
An automated tool can identify a missing title, but it cannot reliably establish whether your service claim is accurate. It may flag a short page that already answers a simple question well, or overlook a long page that says very little.
Ask for affected URLs and an explanation of impact. Separate an urgent fault on a core service page from a minor issue on a low-value archive.
What should you receive?
Expect a clear scope, evidence, priorities and an explanation of who would implement each fix. A useful recommendation says what to change and how to verify it. A report that ends at “improve content” leaves the hard decision untouched.
You can find SEO problems yourself to prepare a focused brief for a provider.
An audit starts the work
After a fix, recheck the page and monitor the relevant outcome. Sitewell offers an initial website review and ongoing health and SEO auditing within its website care service. Deeper interpretation depends on connected data and agreed scope.
