What are Google search impressions?
Understand impressions, clicks and click-through rate, then use page-level trends to decide whether growing visibility is useful.

An impression records an appearance in search
In Search Console, an impression is counted under Google’s rules when a link to your site appears in a result a user encounters. Exact counting can vary by search feature. It is not the same as a website visit or a unique person.
Clicks record interactions that take users to your site. Click-through rate is clicks divided by impressions, expressed as a percentage.

A simple example
If a page has 1,000 impressions and 30 clicks in a selected report, its click-through rate is 3%. Those figures alone do not tell you whether the visitors were suitable or became customers. They also do not explain why the other impressions did not become clicks.
Why impressions can rise while clicks stay flat
Your page may be appearing for more queries, including searches where it is less prominent or less relevant. The search results layout can also change. Compare the same query and page before deciding the title has become worse.
An overall average can hide a useful improvement on one service page and a decline elsewhere.
Use the query and page checks to narrow the comparison.
Turn the numbers into a question
| Pattern | Question to investigate |
|---|---|
| More relevant impressions and more clicks | Are those visits producing suitable enquiries? |
| More impressions, few extra clicks | Which new queries are contributing, and where does the page appear? |
| Fewer impressions for seasonal services | Has demand changed compared with the same season? |
| Very small totals | Is there enough data to draw a conclusion? |
Use impressions as an early signal
Sitewell uses connected Search Console data to help identify pages worth improving. An impression trend can point to an opportunity, but it should be read alongside intent, clicks and business outcomes.
