How long does SEO take to work?

Set realistic expectations by separating implementation, discovery, ranking changes and customer enquiries, then agree useful review points.

There is no single SEO waiting period

A corrected broken link can help a visitor immediately. Search engines still need to revisit and process a changed page before search results can reflect it, and more competitive improvements may take much longer to assess. “SEO takes six months” is too blunt to explain these different jobs.

Ask what will be changed, when it will be live and what evidence would indicate progress. A monthly payment is not itself evidence of implementation.

Separate the stages of progress

Separate the stages of progress
StageWhat you can check
Work completedThe agreed change is visible and works on the live page.
Discovery and indexingThe page can be crawled and indexing evidence is reviewed.
Search responseRelevant query and page trends are compared consistently.
Business responseSuitable enquiries or bookings are assessed against capacity and seasonality.

Why one website improves sooner than another

An established page with a clear missing answer is a different starting point from a new website in a competitive market. Technical obstacles, limited evidence, slow approvals and a lack of relevant demand can all affect progress.

Agree review points rather than a guaranteed ranking deadline. A first review might confirm delivery and technical access; a later one can assess search trends once enough data exists.

What to do if nothing seems to change

Check whether the work was actually published, whether the intended page is indexed and whether you are measuring the right query group. If impressions are too sparse for a useful comparison, say so. Do not keep making random changes simply to produce activity.

The guide to how to measure SEO helps distinguish work completed from results achieved.

What Sitewell can make visible

Sitewell connects search analysis and managed improvements with ongoing reporting. That gives a basis for discussing what changed and what deserves attention next; it does not guarantee the speed or size of a ranking improvement.
